xLight today announced a new partnership with the Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) at Cornell University. The newly announced partnership will enable research and development collaboration between the two organizations with an emphasis on technologies that CLASSE pioneered during the development of the Cornell BNL ERL Test Accelerator (CBETA). This collaborative research and development will help expedite the commercialization of these technologies for use in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.

Bruce Dunham, Vice President of Accelerator Systems at xLight, said about the new partnership, “CLASSE’s facilities, history of innovation, and breakthroughs in accelerator physics make its department one of the world’s preeminent leaders in accelerator technologies. Many of the technologies developed at Cornell over the years are integral to xLight’s mission, and we are eager to support their team’s work as their partners.”

"This new collaboration presents a unique opportunity to transform the pioneering technologies developed at Cornell for significant market and societal impact. Collaborations like these can fuel progress and attract further investments in science and technology, benefiting society as a whole,” stated Krystyn Van Vliet, Vice President for Research and Innovation at Cornell University.

Under this new partnership, xLight and Cornell will further develop and test high-brightness electron sources, superconducting RF cavities, and energy recovery linac designs. Cornell is one of the few places in the world capable of executing high power beam tests and evaluating new instruments and accelerator components, both of which are critically important to xLight’s mission to build the ultimate light source for semiconductor manufacturing.

About xLight

xLight is a venture-backed start-up based in Palo Alto, CA, led by a team of light source pioneers, lithographers, and particle accelerator builders. The company was founded with the mission to build a light source capable of revolutionizing lithography, metrology and inspection. Our work is driven by the belief that the United States must regain and sustain leadership in semiconductor manufacturing. xLight leverages decades of investment and U.S. leadership in particle accelerator technology, infrastructure, and knowledge to rapidly develop and deploy our unique light source. Building on this foundation, we designed an HVM compatible system with novel capabilities that delivers productivity and performance to enable decades of continued advancement in leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing. xLight’s EUV light source will help the United States to both regain and sustain its leadership position in the semiconductor industry of tomorrow.

About Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE).

CLASSE studies our world and universe using x-rays and high energy electrons and proton beams. We develop organic solar cells and study the folding of long DNA strands at CLASSE's CHESS national x-ray user facility, study the Higgs boson with the Large Hadron Collider, and glimpse the early universe with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope.
